ENDANGERED SPECIES
WEC conducts literature reviews and field surveys for endangered species as a
supporting service for nationwide and individual US Army Corps of Engineers
permitting and as stand-alone projects. We use the latest computerized databases
available from the US Fish and Wildlife Service and state agencies to identify
species potentially occurring on a project site. Field studies are conducted to
determine if the project site contains suitable habitat for protected species
potentially occurring in the area. Suitable habitats are carefully examined to
document the presence or absence of protected species.
Endangered species rarely are found on development sites. However, when they do
occur, it is often possible to conduct on-site preservation, relocation, or
other forms of mitigation that will allow the proposed project to proceed. The
regulatory coordination with the USACE and USFWS that is required in this case
is known as a Section 7 consultation, referring to the interagency coordination
portion of the federal Endangered Species Act. WEC can assist you with the
Section 7 consultation efforts. We also have substantial experience outside of
the federal Section 404 process coordinating endangered species issues with the
USFWS and state fish and wildlife agencies.
