MITIGATION BANK
WEC has conducted numerous stream enhancement projects where the primary goals
were to increase aquatic habitat diversity. Construction of in-stream structures
creates a diversity of habitats such as riffles, pools, and waterfalls where
none existed before. These habitats increase the variety of fish and aquatic
insects present in a stream and improve water quality by increasing oxygenation
and enhancing natural sediment trapping abilities.
Construction of in-stream enhancement structures also benefits the
esthetic appeal of the area. The sights and sounds of water flowing over
rocks and small waterfalls are pleasing to many people. In a residential
development, careful placement of structures in high visibility locations
will produce a visual amenity. This type of enhancement also can produce
quicker sales and command higher prices when the efforts are concentrated on
individual residential lots. |
